URBAN DELIGHTS FARM STAND
There are many lessons to be learned in the garden and the Urban Delights Farm seeks to teach them all. In our raised beds, area youth learn the importance of good nutrition and gain the ability to grow food for their families and neighbors.
Each year, teens learn to price, market and manage a retail produce business. In addition, they gain valuable work experience and learn to partner with others in the community.
The Jubilee Southwest Community Learning Farm and Urban Delights are sources of nutritious, affordable, and accessible fresh produce to residents and businesses in the city of Syracuse. Both programs promote sustainable environmental practices, youth development, community revitalization, and community engagement with the local food system.
(1) Increase food security and food justice
(2) Promote positive youth development through employment and training
(3) Improve the use, environmental, and aesthetic quality of vacant land
(4) Enhance community awareness of the importance of green spaces as well as healthy and nutritious food choices.
Urban Delights Youth Entrepreneurship Project
Urban Delights is a 6-8 week program that employs 8-12 youth. Throughout the summer months, youth run a farm stand just as any typical small business. Youth assume a major role in running the stand as they will set prices, handle customer service, and are responsible for marketing and advertising. Urban Delights participants also get their hands in the soil, cultivating and harvesting produce, and will learn all aspects of developing and managing the JHSWCLF. Youth receive training on incorporating healthy eating and lifestyle choices in their lives and the lives of community members. This includes teaching them how to prepare the fruit and vegetables they grow, safe food handling practices, the importance of the variety of produce, and how to make healthy lifestyle choices in a variety of settings.
