Celebrate "The Day of Orature" on July 18 at Clinton Square

Join us in celebrating the power of storytelling, culture, and community at The Day of Orature!

On Saturday, July 18, the Mĩcere Gĩthae Mũgo Foundation will host this free, day-long festival in Clinton Square honoring the life and legacy of Professor Mĩcere Gĩthae Mũgo—renowned Kenyan poet, playwright, educator, and former Chair of Syracuse University's Department of African American Studies.

Enjoy spoken word, oral storytelling, music, and performances from young voices across five competition categories, with cash prizes awarded throughout the day. Professor Mũgo believed the spoken word has the power to preserve history, inspire justice, and strengthen community—and this festival brings that vision to life.
